About Our Computers

What operating system do your computers run?

All our computers run Linux Mint 22.2 (Computerbank Edition) — a free, open-source operating system with over 70 applications pre-installed. It's designed to be user-friendly and works great on refurbished hardware.

Can I install Windows instead?

Our computers come with Linux only. We don't provide Windows licences. Note that your warranty is extended from 3 to 6 months if you keep Linux installed.

What software is included?

Every computer comes with 70+ free applications including LibreOffice (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations), Firefox and Chrome web browsers, GIMP image editor, VLC media player, Audacity audio editor, and many more.

What warranty do I get?

All computers come with a 3-month back-to-base warranty, extended to 6 months if Linux remains installed. After warranty, repairs cost $25 plus the cost of parts.

Linux & Tech Support

I've never used Linux before — is it hard?

Not at all! Our customised Linux is designed to be user-friendly. It works similarly to other operating systems — you'll find familiar apps for web browsing, email, documents, and more. We also offer free basic training in store.

Where can I get help with my computer?

We offer remote Linux support — use our support chatbot (the chat icon on this page) for quick help, or call us on (03) 9600 9161 during opening hours. You can also visit us in store or check the Linux Mint documentation.

Can I install additional software?

Yes! Linux has thousands of free applications available through the built-in Software Manager. You can browse and install them with just a few clicks.

Will my printer work with Linux?

Not all printers are compatible with Linux. HP printers generally work best. Printer setup may require manual configuration as drivers are not always automatic. We recommend checking compatibility before purchasing a printer.

Donating & Volunteering

How can I donate a computer?

We accept clean, working laptops, tablets and mobile phones. Bring them to our workshop at 60 Belfast Street, Broadmeadows during opening hours. For bulk or business donations (laptops, desktops and monitors), collection can be arranged — please call ahead. We no longer accept individual donations of printers, scanners, desktop computers or monitors.

What happens to equipment that can't be reused?

Equipment that can't be refurbished is responsibly recycled locally. We never send e-waste to landfill or overseas for unsafe dismantling. We've recycled over 30,000 items this way.

How can I volunteer?

We're always looking for volunteers! Visit our volunteering page to see available roles and apply. We ask for a minimum commitment of 1 shift per week for the first month.

Do I need technical skills to volunteer?

Not necessarily! While some roles require Linux knowledge, we also need help with customer service, warehouse work, and administration. There are roles for all skill levels.
