Using Zoom on Computerbank Ubuntu 18.04

For a desktop you will need a webcam with a microphone, or a separate headset for the microphone and speakers if your webcam doesn’t have a built-in mic. Laptops typically have built-in cameras. Zoom usually configures audio automatically.

You can test your webcam using the “Cheese” application found in the Sound & Video section of your apps menu.

Installing the Zoom app

Download the Zoom client from zoom.us/download. The free version works well unless you need meetings longer than 40 minutes.

When downloading, select these system details:

  • Linux Type: Ubuntu
  • OS Architecture: 64 bit
  • Version: 16.04+

Open the downloaded file with GDebi Package Installer and complete the installation. The Zoom app will appear in the Internet section of your applications menu.

Joining an existing meeting

You can either click the meeting link in your invitation email, or open Zoom manually, click “Join”, and enter the Meeting ID and Passcode. Once in the meeting, select “Join with Computer Audio” and activate your video from the toolbar.

Starting your own meeting

Open Zoom and select “New meeting” to become the host. Use the sliders near the speaker icon to adjust microphone and speaker volume. The “Participants” button lets you invite attendees to join.

Check the Zoom Help Centre for advanced features like screen sharing.
