Computerbank Store Closure
After operating for 25 years, Computerbank will close its North Melbourne location at the end of January 2025. The organisation has provided affordable computers to low-income individuals while diverting electronic waste from landfills since founder Kylie Davies established it in November 1999.
In the face of rising costs and falling supply of quality donations, Computerbank is no longer able to continue Ms Davies’ vision from this location.
Despite persistent need — digital access remains critical for employment, government services, education, and social connection — the current operational model has become unsustainable. Electronic waste generation continues accelerating, yet the organisation can no longer address these challenges through its physical storefront alone.
We are immensely grateful to decades of volunteers, staff, and community members who contributed to the shop’s success. Currently, the facility is clearing inventory and cannot accept desktop donations, though usable laptops are still being processed through January.
Following the closure, Computerbank intends to continue selling remaining laptops and computers via phone. Unsold inventory will be dismantled into components and recycled responsibly.
